Accreditation for Private Halls

We operate a formal accreditation scheme that enables participating private halls to exclusively advertise and promote their accommodation through the university’s official platform for approved student housing. This scheme provides a trusted channel for reaching prospective student tenants and reinforces the hall’s commitment to quality and compliance.

Accreditation is granted for a two-year cycle, commencing on 1st October and concluding on 30th September. The first year covers the advertising period, while the second year aligns with the student occupancy phase. Once accredited, a hall retains its approved status until 30th September following the end of the student tenancy agreements.

How to Register

To register for accreditation with Manchester Student Homes, private hall providers must commit to the Code of Standards for Larger Student Schemes. This commitment is a prerequisite for gaining access to exclusive advertising through the university’s approved accommodation platform. The following forms will require completing:

🟧 Larger Student Schemes Code Declaration

🟧 Private Hall Advertising Form

🟧 Private Hall Rooms Type Price List

Supporting Documents

To proceed with (re-)accreditation for each hall, the following documentation must be submitted. Where previously provided documents have expired, updated versions are required:

🟧 Fire Risk Assessment conducted by a qualified assessor

🟧 Electrical Installation Condition Report

🟧 Gas Safety Certificate

🟧 Legionella Risk Assessment

🟧 Local Authority Licences (where applicable)

🟧 Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) records

🟧 Current tenancy agreement

Accreditation Fees

The accreditation fee for larger student schemes listed with Manchester Student Homes is £7.50 + VAT per bed space.

Please note that registration and payment are required for each individual bed space within a scheme. Advertising will only commence once full payment has been received.

If you prefer to pay by purchase order, you will need to register as a customer of The University of Manchester. For guidance on this process, please contact Penny at penny.chan@manchester.ac.uk.

Adverts

If you need to make amendments or updates to your advert, please email the details to penny.chan@manchester.ac.uk, and we will update it for you.

For larger accredited student schemes that become fully occupied, the advert will remain visible on the website with a “Waiting List” status rather than being removed.

The advertising period for larger student schemes runs annually from 1 October to 30 September. All adverts for these schemes will be removed from the Manchester Student Homes website at the end of the advertising period.

Brand Recognition

Accreditation Plus for Private Halls

Accreditation Plus (A+) represents the highest standard within our scheme. Private Halls that achieve this level demonstrate exceptional commitment to quality and compliance. As a benefit, A+ privare halls receive preferential advertising on the Manchester Student Homes website—the advert listings will appear higher in search results, giving you greater visibility when students look for accommodation.

To achieve A+ status, private halls must demonstrate a commitment to enhanced standards in the following areas:

🟧 Managing Anti-Social Behaviour - Implement clear policies and proactive measures to address and reduce disruptive behaviour.

🟧 Community Engagement - Foster positive relationships within the local community and encourage student participation in community initiatives.

🟧 Pastoral Care & Welfare Support - Provide robust support systems to promote student wellbeing, including accessible pastoral care and welfare services.

International Friendly Standard

Manchester Student Homes developed the International Friendly Standard (IFS) to recognise private halls and landlords who deliver fair, transparent, and supportive services to international students. To achieve this standard, providers must meet the defined criteria and demonstrate a commitment to going above and beyond in the level of service offered.

This initiative is supported by the International Departments at The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University, as well as the International Society.
