The Good Neighbours Team launched in January 2014, the team was created from the Community Team at Manchester Student Homes. This launch heralded a new approach in dealing with off campus student affairs and The Good Neighbours Team will be working with the wider MSH Team to offer students, landlords and long term residents a complete range of services.

Off Campus Student Affairs Officer

Poppy Humphrey

Hi, I am the Off Campus Student Affairs Officer, this is a jointly-supported role across The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University and it is based in the Manchester Student Homes office in Fallowfield. My role allows me to work across various off campus areas across Manchester. An important part of what I do is acting as the direct link between residents, students, partner agencies and the universities to coordinate issues concerning students’ off-campus activities. I advise students on various issues about living in the community, deal with residents’ issues and concerns, and mediate where appropriate to resolve community tensions. I also work with partner agencies the Good Neighbours Team run campaigns, events and activities throughout the year to encourage more students to engage and improve their local communities.

I am keen to work with students to learn about your experiences of living off campus, and how Manchester Student Homes can help to support you in the transition from Halls to Home. It would be fantastic to hear from long term residents or local businesses about how you would like to engage with students and if you have any ideas about involving students in the local community!

Community Cohesion Interns

We have two Community Cohesion Interns running programmes and a variety of events both on and off campus to support students living in the community:

Christos Hadjiarapis

Hi! My name is Christos and I am The University of Manchester Community Cohesion Graduate Intern with Manchester Student Homes. I have been a student at The University of Manchester for eight years, from an undergraduate to a PhD degree, and I am grateful to be an active member of this vibrant Manchester community. During my Manchester experience I had the opportunity to be a member of the Nightline service and the Legal Advice Centre, work as a student mentor, a student representative and a teaching assistant at The School of Law and for the past two years I volunteer as a Residential Life Advisor.

As the 2019-2020 Community Cohesion Intern I run programmes and a variety of events both on and off campus to support students living in the community. I am keen to increase the awareness of environmental and recycling schemes and off campus student safety as well as other issues. By assisting Poppy, the Off Campus Student Affairs Officer, I deliver the work of the Good Neighbours Team and our Halls to Home campaign.

I am looking forward to hearing from both long term residents and student residents to learn about your experiences and receive your feedback and suggestions on how we can improve community cohesion. Please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Owen Rees

Hi, my name is Owen and I am the Manchester Metropolitan Universities’ Community Cohesion Intern. My role is to work together with students to encourage the development of the Universities commitment to student engagement within the community, and educate the students about living in an off-campus community. I am keen to inform the students about the impact of environmental issues as well as promoting the importance of student safety whilst living in an off-campus environment. I will also be assisting with various events within the Fallowfield/Withington area as well as working with on-campus representatives to promote socially responsible behaviour, as well as working closely with representatives of the UK Town & Gown Association to bring together a nationwide approach to the issues surrounding student living in a residential community.

Student Community Advisors

We have three Student Community Advisors engaging with students living in the community:

Emilia Colman

I am Manchester Metropolitan University’s Student Community Advisor. I am originally from London but I’ve fallen in love with Manchester while living up here to study. I am currently in my final year of a Geography degree, and a lot of what interests me most about the subject is tied to what I do at Manchester Student Homes. For example: supporting programmes encouraging students to care for their environment by recycling correctly, or events that aim to raise awareness of the impacts of noise pollution. I am very grateful to be part of such an amazing team of people who are making a difference in the community, and I look forward to the role I will have in this.

Maria Owusu-Mensah

My name is Maria Owusu-Mensah and I am in the second year of my Chemical Engineering degree at the University of Manchester. I am one of three Student Community Advisors. Previously working as a Student Services Assistant sparked my interest in supporting students during their time at university and my new role at Manchester student homes aligns with this interest. I am excited about the opportunity to become an active member of the community, as well as to work with my team to promote the good neighbour’s initiative, personal safety and the eradication of hate crime.

Shalini Sivanandan

Hi, I’m Shalini Sivanandan and I’m a Student Community Advisor with Manchester Student Homes from the University of Manchester. I’m looking forward to working with both students and the local residents to help improve living standards for everyone. It’s important that everyone feels safe and part of a community and I’m keen to engage with people from different backgrounds to achieve this.
