Hi, I am the Off Campus Student Affairs Officer, this is a jointly-supported role across The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University and it is based in the Manchester Student Homes office in Fallowfield. My role allows me to work across various off campus areas across Manchester. An important part of what I do is acting as the direct link between residents, students, partner agencies and the universities to coordinate issues concerning students’ off-campus activities. I advise students on various issues about living in the community, deal with residents’ issues and concerns, and mediate where appropriate to resolve community tensions. I also work with partner agencies the Good Neighbours Team run campaigns, events and activities throughout the year to encourage more students to engage and improve their local communities.

I am keen to work with students to learn about your experiences of living off campus, and how Manchester Student Homes can help to support you in the transition from Halls to Home. It would be fantastic to hear from long term residents or local businesses about how you would like to engage with students and if you have any ideas about involving students in the local community!

Community Cohesion Intern (CCI)

Brett Langsdale

Hi, my name is Brett Langsdale. I am the Manchester Metropolitan University’s Community Cohesion Intern at Manchester Student Homes. As a member of the Good Neighbours Team and Manchester Metropolitan University I will be working on the Halls 2 Home Campaign supporting students during their transition from Halls of Residence to living in the local community in off-campus accommodation. I have a plethora of experience working in community engagement and outreach, as I have volunteered and interned for a variety of community-based organisations such as Child.org (formerly named The Kenyan Orphan Project), Refugee Forum, Stop the War Coalition, and Retrak. It is because of this experience that I understand the importance and value of community work. I am looking forward to contributing to the effective delivery of community cohesion centred projects. I would be keen to hear from students, long-term residents and partner organisations about the campaigns we have planned for the rest of the year and how we can work together to create a more harmonious community. I would also be truly grateful for any thoughts or suggestions you may have about future events we could organise to improve community cohesion.

Community Cohesion Intern (CCI)

Alice Nield

Hi I am Alice, The University of Manchester’s new Community Cohesion Intern here at Manchester Student Homes. Over the next 12 months I will be working alongside Poppy the Off Campus Student Affairs Officer and Brett the Community Cohesion Intern for Manchester Metropolitan University. We will be working together to enhance community cohesion through developing student awareness of and engagement with local communities in off campus areas. One key project I will be working on is the Halls 2 Home initiative which will educate students on the responsibilities of living in the local community as they move out of university halls. As a recent geography graduate of UoM having lived in both Fallowfield and Withington, I hope to offer an insight into what it is like to be a student living in these communities and also contribute new ideas regarding achieving a more cohesive community.
